Community Sewing Event

Saturday, January 31 from 11:00-3:00 PM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 210 Lauderdale St, Selma, AL 36701

What will we be doing?

Please join us for a community sewing session/quilting bee led by the creators of Birmingham’s “March Quilts” (Bib&Tucker Sew-Op). All churches, organizations, and individuals in our community are invited to join together to make 7” quilt squares for a unity quilt. This project is sponsored by a group of leaders in the faith community who are planning a Unity March, so the “March Quilt” project has agreed to let us do things a little differently by helping us create a “unity quilt” in connection with this event. The quilt squares will remain in Selma and be sewn into a quilt locally after the sewing session. The quilt will be carried in the Unity March (Sunday, March 1 at 2:00 PM) and will remain in the community on display at a central location (TBA).

Who can come and what do I bring?

All are welcome. No sewing experience is necessary as the facilitators will assist with basic stitching techniques. The Selma Art Guild has generously offered to provide the pre-cut 7” blocks and additional scrap fabrics but we since we don’t know how many people to expect, it would be helpful for anyone who is able to bring extra supplies to share (scrap fabrics, hand stitching thread, embroidery hoops, scissors, embroidery needles, thimbles, fabric pens, needle threaders, pins, etc). Please see contact information below if you are interested in donating supplies.

What if I can’t come to this event?

If you are unable to attend this event, quilt squares can be dropped off at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (210 Laurderdale St, Monday through Thursday from 8:30-3:30) or mailed (PO Box 1306, Selma, AL 36702) before Tuesday, February 3!

Quilt square guidelines:

-Start with a 7”x7” square of 100% cotton fabric in a solid color. The color of this background fabric should follow the “March Quilts” color theme: solid grey, blue, green, rust, or brown. The fabrics that you use to decorate your square can be in any color or pattern that you choose.

-Content: Create an image that symbolizes unity to you OR create the word “Selma” on your quilt square. Images can be created in a number of different ways (examples include appliqué, embroidery, or hand or machine stitching).

-Leave at least 1/4” margins around the edges as this space will be hidden when the blocks are sewn together.

-You may include the name of your church or organization on the quilt square if you choose.
