The Red Door Theatre in Union Springs kicks off its 2016 season this month with the production of Wedding Belles. In this delightful Southern comedy, four garden-club ladies meet a young girl who has come by bus to their little Texas town one day in the summer of 1942 to rendezvous with her infantryman beau at the station and marry him there before he ships off for World War II. The women impulsively decide to throw the girl an elaborate wedding, and their lives and friendships are thrown into turmoil as they race to accomplish the nuptials in one frenzied afternoon as one thing after another threatens to ruin their plans.
Wedding Belles is directed by Atlantan Kathryn Adams Wood whose family roots run deep in Bullock County. The cast includes locals Alicia Atkins, Belinda Barto, Beth Egan, and Charity Smith. Lisa Norton from Auburn rounds out the all female cast and will be remembered for her outstanding performance as Patsy Cline at the Red Door in 2014. The play is by Alan Bailey, co-author of one of the country’s most frequently produced musicals, “Smoke on the Mountain” and Ronnie Claire Edwards, best known for her portrayal of the unforgettable Corabeth Godsey on “The Waltons.” They are the playwrights who brought “The Mystery of Miz Arnette” to the Red Door last summer.
