Building Bridges for Renewal, Resiliency and Justice. From the Ground Up.

Gulf Coast Community Initiatives (GCCI) is a home grown and effective catalyst for local and regional renewal in the Gulf South. We bring together projects and collaborations that address systemic challenges, injustices and opportunities facing the region’s most vulnerable communities and ecosystems.

Our mission is to support, connect and amplify community voices, struggles and victories for a more healthy, just and resilient Gulf Coast.

Who We Are
Like the communities that we serve, GCCI’s board, staff and advisors reflect the Gulf region’s remarkable diversity of people, places and cultures. Hailing mostly from the counties, parishes, cities, towns, and bayous of coastal Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, we are predominantly People of Color (inclusive of African American, Native American, Vietnamese American and Mexican American). Among other things, we are writers, educators, fishermen, scientists, artists, activists, lawyers, journalists, parents, and advocates.

Our Approach
GCCI advances a more just, equitable, and sustainable Gulf Coast by investing in local struggles, amplifying community voices, and supporting region-wide advocacy. We:

  • connect people, places, and issues
  • prioritize collaboration and partnership
  • facilitate equitable and inclusive participation and engagement
  • value community experience and wisdom
  • elevate community leadership, innovation, and solutions
  • cultivate movements that are transformational and accountable to the communities they seek to empower, protect and renew

Our History
GCCI inherits and honors the valued experience, input and influence of many struggles, communities and voices for self-determination on the Gulf Coast. We are a conjoining of three respected entities with a combined 24 years of experience working to support Gulf Coast communities. The Gulf Coast Fund for Community Renewal and Ecological Health [], Bridge The Gulf [] and Turkey Creek Community Initiatives have been groundbreaking models in the fields of community-based philanthropy, media-making, and place-based, interdisciplinary community advocacy.
