The Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) mourns the passing of George McMillan Jr., a visionary leader, devoted public servant, and cherished member of our founding family. George passed away on April 18, 2025, at the age of 81, following complications from surgery. His loss is deeply felt across the Black Belt, all of Alabama and beyond.
A son of the Black Belt born in Greenville, Alabama, George McMillan’s life was one marked by service, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others. He served Alabama with distinction in all three branches of state government—first elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1973, then the Alabama Senate from 1974 to 1978, and ultimately as Lieutenant Governor, elected on November 7, 1978.
But for those of us at BBCF, George’s greatest legacy lives on in the foundation he helped to build. As one of five co-founders of the Black Belt Community Foundation, George envisioned a new kind of philanthropic model—one rooted in community, equity, and the belief that the people of the Black Belt are the region’s greatest asset. His leadership extended well beyond the foundation’s founding. George served on the BBCF Board of Directors for ten years, including three as Chair, and continued to offer his wisdom and support as a Board Member Emeritus until his passing.
Reflecting on the early days of the foundation, George once said: “Literally, we spent 2 years at Wallace Community College, and we sat around the table… and y’all cannot imagine everything we discussed… I don’t think any community foundation has had a better genesis than did the BBCF, and one of the most important parts was having Community Associates.”
His words remain a powerful reminder of how the BBCF was, and continues to be, a reflection of the communities it serves.
In honoring George, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey remembered him as “a man of great ideas” and ordered that the state flag will be flown at half-staff—a fitting tribute to a life that helped shape the state for the better.
We are forever grateful for George McMillan’s vision, generosity, and unwavering belief in the promise of the Black Belt. May his legacy continue to inspire all who work for justice, opportunity, and hope in our communities. George lives on in the work that BBCF will continue to do every day in service to the communities of the Black Belt.
Thank You George!
