Black Belt Community Foundation Update on Community Tornado Disaster Relief and Recovery Efforts

In response to the devastating tornadoes and storms on January 12, 2023, Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) immediately accessed the “Communities Helping Communities Disaster Fund.” This fund was created in 2008 to aid Black Belt communities in disasters and will now be used for the affected areas of Dallas, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry and Sumter counties. BBCF, at the request of the Mayor of the City of Selma, partnered for the launch of the “Selma Rebuild and Recovery Fund.

(You can still support these funds by clicking on either link from their names above).

  • To date, there are nearly 500 private and organizational donors that have supported the disaster relief funds and this number increases daily.
  • BBCF has conducted surveys to assess community needs and organizational capacity to manage large grants for a phased disbursement of funds.
  • BBCF has released $60,000 in 5 counties (Dallas, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Sumter) as the first phase of disbursements.
  • The second phase will involve disbursement to individuals, faith-based groups, and community organizations with a tentative plan for disbursement to be announced soon.
