Wilcox Empowerment Community Action Network

The mission of the Wilcox Empowerment Community Action Network (WeCAN) is to build healthier communities by connecting families to resources that will lead to wholesome, healthy, and fulfilling lives at work, school, and play.

Since 2017, the BBCF has engaged with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through their Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (IRL) program – created by RWJF to bring together researchers, community foundations, and community members to engage in applied research in support of a Culture of Health.

WeCAN is a product of the research conducted by Cohort Six of the IRL program. Team members include: Felecia Lucky (left), President of the Black Belt Community Foundation; Dr. Lilanta Joy Bradley (middle), Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and Population Health at The University of Alabama; & Dr. Jen Nickelson (right), Associate Professor of Health Science at The University of Alabama.
